What do you think is the most exciting thing about being a Natural Medicine Practitioner?

There are so many to choose from.

We get to help people change their lives by getting their health back.

We can financially contribute to our family.

We are part of an incredibly supportive, predominantly female profession.

We are making an ethical contribution to the world.

We have the freedom to adapt our skills to many different career paths.

For me, it’s the fact that we can make our own dreams come true.

We can create not just the business and career that we dream of, but also the lifestyle. We have the freedom to work as an employee in Health Food shops, Nutraceutical companies, or Research.

We can work for ourselves as clinicians, consultants, workshop leaders, authors, course creators and so much more.

So the question I pose to you today, is “Whose Dream Are You Building?”

And if it isn’t yours, why isn’t it?

Are you creating the career path you really want, or the one you think you’re supposed to have?

It’s an interesting conundrum really. We go through our training at college, and the preparation and expectation is always that we will go into clinical practice.

Upon graduation, our thoughts turn to the clinic forms we need, whether to work in an established practice or go out on our own, and which Association we should join. What should our logo be, and how to organise a website.

But how many of us really  stop, take a deep breath and  have a good, long think about what we really want to do. What contribution we want to make? And above all, what will bring us the most joy?

I’ll be the first to admit I’m guilty of this.

And the funny thing is, now I can see why the last few years have been such a battle.

Because my heart wasn’t in it 100%.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Nutrition & Herbs, and helping people with their health, but it isn’t what lights me up inside. I enjoy it, but it isn’t my life’s work.

What is really interesting, is how this insidiously manifested within my business.

It was hard. It was an uphill battle, and deep down, I wasn’t ;happy. But I soldiered on because I thought it was what I was supposed to do.

Late last year, the Universe stepped in and made me sit back and reassess my journey. I had to face up to the fact that it just wasn’t working for me. Not the way I wanted it to.

After some deep introspection, long talks with dear friends, and more than a few tears, I finally came to the realisation that I had to fundamentally change my business structure. I didn’t have to give up Natural Medicine, I just had to change the way that I used it. I had to use it in a way that made my heart sing.

For me, it wasn’t finding more families to fill my clinic bookings, or selling more of my meal plan subscriptions or ecourses. It was about embracing what I enjoyed the most about what I was already doing in my practice – building websites and writing, and doing more of it.

Just because I could work as a Nutritional Medicine Practitioner & Herbalist, didn’t mean I had to.

I discovered that by helping other Practitioners build their Practices with the behind-the-scenes work that didn’t bring them joy, I could in fact help even more people.

By helping other Praccies be more successful in their businesses, I can contribute towards the ripple effect of helping more people achieve their health goals. But it doesn’t have to be me on the coal face.

Guess what happened when I finally gave in to what I really enjoy,

rather than doing what I thought I was supposed to be doing?

My business flourished!

My stress levels dropped.

And I’m now having so much more fun with my work.

The best part is, I get to spend lots of time on the phone chatting with other awesome Practitioners, hearing about the wonderful work they are doing, and helping them make their change in the world.

So now it’s your turn to ask the big question.

Are you doing your passion’s work and watching your business flourish, or as my Dad would say, are you “flogging a dead horse”, doing what you think you should be doing?

Are you working with your ideal clients in your own particular sphere of genius, or are chasing everyone and treating everything because you think you have to?

If you’ve seen the light and have found your calling, Congratulations! The world is a better place for you and your work. If you don’t feel 100% aligned with what your doing though, or it all feels like it’s just so much harder than it should be, then perhaps it’s time to whip out the journal and start asking some questions.

If what you’re currently doing isn’t bringing you the joy and success that you dreamed of, what tweaks or changes could you make that would make a difference?

Who do you really want to work with?

Which types of cases really get you excited?

The more you enjoy your work, and the more your heart is in it, the more successful you will be.

If you don’t know what you really want to do, have a think about who you love working with the most.

What other ways can you engage with them to support them on their journey?

How can you integrate that into your Practice more?
